Coveya was brought in to support works on the HS2 project as part of Balfour Beatty’s work around the Kingsbury and Marston area near the M42. The team needed to move 6C stone, including chunks measuring around 150mm, from bridge level down to the ground below.
The stone could be loaded at the top of the bridge by an excavator, but moving it down using heavy plant would have increased the associated risks of vehicle movements around other operators on site. With this risk identified, conveyors were selected as a safer way to efficiently move the material between levels.
A Carefully Planned Conveyor Solution
We supplied a 7.5m and 13.5m GP750 conveyor configuration to carry the stone from the top of the bridge down to ground level, where it could then be taken away from the working area.
One of the main challenges was getting the conveyors into position. Restricted access and the height of the bridge meant the installation needed careful planning. Drawing on our experience with complex conveyor installations, we pre-assembled the equipment before delivery so it could be lifted by HIAB directly into its working position, reducing the amount of work required around the bridge.
Coveya worked alongside the BBV team on the temporary works design, conveyor weights and support loads, lifting plan and RAMS so the system could be installed around the requirements of the site. Using hired conveyors provided the project with a dedicated material-handling setup designed specifically for the transfer.
A Safer Way to Move Stone Between Levels
Once positioned, the GP750 conveyors provided a direct route for moving the 6C stone from bridge level to the ground area below. Material could be loaded by excavator at the top of the bridge, transferred down through the conveyor system and then removed from the collection area.
By taking heavy plant out of this stage of the process, the conveyor system reduced the risk of vehicle movements around other operators while still giving the team an effective way to move large stone between levels. It provided a safer, more controlled material-handling method for a difficult part of the site and added another specialist project to Coveya’s growing list of success stories.
